Eyelid Surgery

One of the first things noticed about a person is their eyes.  Whether due to the aging process or heredity, excess skin, wrinkles and puffiness can make a person look tired or older than they feel.

Eyelid surgery (known as blepharoplasty) is a corrective procedure that can improve the appearance of the upper eyelids, lower eyelids or both.  It can remove loose or sagging skin from the upper eyelids or excess fatty deposits that appear as puffiness or “bags” under the eyes.  It can also remove excess skin and fine wrinkles from the lower eyelid area.  This results in a more youthful appearance to the eyes.

Blepharoplasty surgery is often performed in conjunction with other facial procedures such as a face lift or rhinoplasty (nose surgery).

Reasons for Considering Eyelid Surgery:

  • Excess skin on upper eyelids.
  • Wrinkles or bags in lower eyelid area.
  • A tired appearance or puffiness due to inherited factors.

General Procedure

An incision is made within the natural contour of the upper eyelid. Scarring is minimal and well concealed.  The surgeon removes fat deposits, tightens loose muscles and tissue and removes excess skin.   The lower eyelid incision is usually hidden inside the lower eyelid (transconjunctival.)  Fat is redistributed or removed and sagging muscles are tightened.  Additionaly, laser technology is often used to smooth and tighten the lower eyelid areas.  Botox injections can also temporarily relax wrinkles in the lower eyelid area.

The surgery generally takes about one hour and is performed in the physician’s surgical suite under general anesthesia.

Recovery Process

Initial healing may include some swelling, bruising, irritation or dry eye.  Discomfort can be controlled with medication, cold compresses and ointment.

The head should be kept elevated until swelling subsides and incisions protected from the sun.  Sunglasses should be worn to protect the eyes from bright light. Most patients can return to work and resume light activity within a few days. Cosmetics can camouflage any bruising or redness that remains.
